  Mary Serfass can't remember when art wasn't a major part of her life.  She was born in New York City in 1956, and   spent some of her childhood in Palmerton, Pennsylvania.  She has worked in many mediums, including oil, watercolor, stone lithography, etching, charcoal and graphite.  After earning a BA in fine art from Penn State University, she returned to her favorite medium, pen and ink, particularly the stipple technique.
    Images are rendered in black and white, using the finest technical pens available.  Color is sometimes added via colored pencil, watercolor, or both.  Some drawings are enhanced with sterling silver, 24 karat gold, or a variety of precious metal leafs, including 23k gold, white gold, pale gold, lemon gold, moongold, palladium, copper and bronze.  Her signature style includes extending parts of the images onto the surrounding mat.  ("It's not fun to stay in the lines."  she says.)  A single drawing may take hundreds of hours to complete.
    Her work has been described as elegant and uplifting.  A few quotes: "The artist shows her command of her medium as well as her ability to draw, a skill not to be taken lightly."
"With their firmness, yet delicacy of expression,... they powerfully evoke the natural world that inspires the artist."
    She became fascinated with miniature art in 1985, and began exhibiting and winning awards in miniature art shows in New Jersey (MASNJ), Washington, DC (MPSGS), Florida (MASF), Georgia, (GMAS), Montana (MMAS) and the Cider Painters of America (CPA), The Heartland Art Guild, The Hilliard Society (UK)  and the Royal Miniature Society (UK), and The Australian Society of Miniature Arts (Tasmania and Victoria.)
    In 1996, her work was included in the World Federation of Miniaturists' inaugural exhibition in London, England, as part of the centennial celebration of the Royal Miniature Society.  Since then, she has had work  accepted in the World Exhibition of Miniatures events in Hobart, Tasmania, the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, Burnie, Tasmania, Moscow, Russia, and Johannesburg, South Africa. 
  In 2013, she was honored to serve as sole awards judge for the 80th anniversary of the MPSGS, and in 2017, she had the honor of serving as sole judge for Seaside Art Gallery's international miniature show in Nags Head, NC.   She is a member of the Miniature Painters Sculptors & Gravers Society of Washington, DC (MPSGS), the Miniature Art Society of Florida (MASF) and  the Cider Painters of America (CPA).
    In 2015, she was elected to signature membership in the Miniature Artists of America, (MAA) an elite group spanning the globe.
    In 2020, she was accepted as an Exhibiting Member of the Australian Society of Miniature Arts (Tasmania).
    She resides in Bethlehem, PA, and is ever thankful for the support of family and friends.
