Pen and ink
artist Mary Serfass was born in New York City and grew up in Palmerton,
Pennsylvania. She received a B.A. in Fine Art from Penn State
University in 1978. While pen and ink has remained her medium of
choice, she has also worked in watercolor, oil, stone lithography and
etching.
Images are rendered in black and white, using
the finest technical pens available. Color is sometimes added via
colored pencil, watercolor, or both. Some drawings are enhanced
with 23 karat gold leaf, 12 karat white gold leaf, copper leaf or palladium leaf. Serfass'
signature style includes extending parts of the image onto the
surrounding mat. A single drawing may take hundreds of hours to
complete.
Her work has been described as elegant and
uplifting. A few written quotes: "...[Serfass] shows her
command of her medium as well as her ability to draw, a skill not to be
taken lightly."
"With their firmness yet delicacy of expression,...they powerfully
evoke the natural world that inspired the artist."
The drawings of Mary Serfass are included in
many collections, both private and public throughout the U.S., Europe
and South America. Two of her mixed media drawings were recently
part of the World Exhibition of Miniatures, held at the Ripley Center,
Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. In 2008, two more of her
works were selected for the World Exhibition of Miniatures, held this
time in Burnie, Tasmania, Australia.

"[The]
compositions sing softly to the eyes. It's the first thing I think when I
see them. Tranquil, ethereal images even when the subject is a passing
storm. There's a professional, experienced balance to all the pictures,
nothing abrupt or confronting, the eye glides around and around each line and
doesn't leave the space. Touches of color give more depth and grounding,
like the mist rising, but still evoke a feeling of the mystic. It's easy
to imagine you are swept away to Avalon or some equally enthralling, mythical
land. Brava!"
